Koh Samet, a Mini Paradise
Although this small island is a popular weekend destination in Thailand, it is still strikingly authentic. It is even a little underdeveloped with a thick jungle and many low-rise buildings instead of large international hotel chains.
The island is only 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long.
The hotels on the beach are nicely “hidden” behind the trees; they have one main road here that runs from the north to the south of Koh Samet, passing all famous beaches and resorts. The interior is filled with a beautiful, green jungle, which is quite special as the island has no rivers and the average rainfall is low.
The island is located between Pattaya and Koh Chang, making it a popular day trip.
The Top 6 Most Beautiful Beaches on Koh Samet
The beaches are of breathtaking beauty. You will not find a busy party scene or fully-built boulevards here, but you will find many bungalow parks on the coast. The island has a calm sea, snow-white beaches, palm trees, and a nice beach bar here and there.
However, you do share the beaches with more people than palm trees. On the east coast you will find the most beautiful beaches and, therefore, the most accommodations.
1. Hai Sai Kaew
Hat Sai Kaew is one of the most beautiful and popular beaches on Koh Samet. The beach is long and 25 to 30 meters wide. The name speaks for itself, Hat Sai Kaew literally means Crystal Sand Beach.
This is a beautiful beach where you can do various activities. From early in the morning until sunset you can enjoy sunbathing, swimming, jet skiing, windsurfing, horse riding, ride on a banana boat and, of course, partying.
TIP – You can find this beach at the easternmost tip of the island.
2. Ao Noi Na
Ao Noi Na, near Hat Sai Kaew, has a different atmosphere than the other two. It is quieter and more suitable for people who are looking for a truly relaxing experience on the white and clean, sandy beach.
TIP – The Travel Hub organization offers tours from Pattaya to Koh Samet.
3. Ao Wong Deuan
Ao Wong Deuan is the third largest beach on the island (the first is Hat Sai Kaew). The beach attracts many travelers because of the beautiful white sand and the many (good) accommodations.
In addition, there are good restaurants with beautiful sea views and it is a great location for sunsets!
4. Ao Prao
Ao Prao is the only beach on the west coast of Samet and it is a beautiful beach. In addition to the snow-white sandy beach, you will also find a number of resorts here. The beach is only 200 meters long, but still very pleasant.
Ao Prao is one of the quietest beaches on Koh Samet.
5. Ao Put Sa
Ao Put Sa is a small bay on the island. Suitable for people who don’t feel like going to the busy beaches and places to go out. Ao Put Sa offers a peaceful retreat where you can enjoy the beautiful nature and the crystal clear sea water.
6. Ao Kiu Nok
This bay is in a perfect secluded location. Those who want to take a break from the busy locations must come here. It is the ideal place to see spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
TIP – The beach is located in the south of Koh Samet.
Where to Stay on Koh Samet
Although the more expensive accommodations have the upper hand here, you will find accommodations in every price range. If you are looking for affordable and often simple accommodations, you can find it on beaches such as Ao Hin Kok, Ao Phai, and Ao Tub Tim. Here you will also find most backpackers.
Which Beaches to Stay On / Near?
The beaches here are fine and not too busy. Especially in Ao Hin Khok you will find a few excellent guesthouses. However, you will not be able to spend the night on Koh Samet very cheaply.
Certainly in the weekends and during the high season the prices can rise very quickly. Count on the following prices;
- Double room budget hotel ➜ US $20 per night
- Double room normal hotel ➜ US $30 to $55 per night
- Resorts ➜ from US $110 per night
