Maldives – The Best Options For Overnight Stays

This post was last updated on February 1st, 2020 at 02:52 pm

The costs in the Maldives are higher than in other countries in Asia. Not long ago you could only stay in resorts in the Maldives, separated from the locals. They kept tourism and the locals strictly separate. Fortunately, that has changed in recent years and tourists can increasingly mingle with the locals. Make no mistake, you can’t book a room here for $10 a night, but the costs are getting cheaper.

Accommodation Costs in the Maldives

For a trip or vacation to the Maldives you have to count on more costs than other countries in Asia. Take a look at our Maldives Budget page for more information about your daily costs.

You can spend the night in the Maldives both in “budget” accommodations and in the most luxurious resorts that you have ever seen.

Prices are still bizarrely high if you compare them with countries such as Thailand or Laos. Prices for budget accommodations are still above $50.

Up until now (2015) there are around 100 accommodations that are cheaper than $70 per night and 25 accommodations that are cheaper than $50 per night. These are mainly on the main island of Malé.

Keep in mind that you should book in advance, especially for the high season! The resorts that you can book are mainly on the smaller private islands. The costs of these resorts vary but you won’t get far below $270 per night.

Best Resorts in the Maldives

We have made an overview of the most beautiful hotels and resorts in the Maldives. They are not cheap, but if you want to spend the night in a unique way these are the best options. View them here!

Hotels in the Maldives

Hotels or resorts are plentiful in the Maldives. The country is a popular place for people who are on a honeymoon or couples. This has been meticulously anticipated by building hotels and resorts. And a hotel on the Maldives is not a standard hotel that you can find anywhere.

The best known are the water villas in the Maldives. You pay a lot of money for this (count at least $250 per night), but you do sleep in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

The water villas are in the water and each house has its own terrace and the most luxurious furnishing. There are even cottages where the bedroom is under water between the coral.

Hostels in the Maldives

The hostel is the most popular option among backpackers. The Maldives is not directly on every backpacker’s to-do list. That is not surprising, since until a few years ago there was little to “backpack” in the country.

This has changed in recent years and more and more guesthouses and hostels are being added to the Maldives. The prices of a hostel in the Maldives cannot be compared (yet) with those of Thailand or Vietnam, but more and more budget options are being added.

Up until now, there are about 100 accommodations on the island that are cheaper than $75 per night and 25 accommodations that are cheaper than $50 per night. These are mainly on the main island of Malé. Make sure you book hostels in advance!
