Whether you go to Bali for a week or want to visit all the islands of Indonesia for a year, you will want to have the nicest weather. It is a huge country which means the weather is not that easy to predict. The high season in Indonesia falls in the months of April to October. On this page, we will tell you everything you need to know about the best time to visit Indonesia.

The Seasons of Indonesia

Indonesia stretches for approximately 4,000 kilometers (about 2485 miles) and has 17,508 islands, meaning some islands have a different climate than others. In Indonesia, you will experience an average temperature of around 30°C (86°F) all year round, so it will never be cold. The high season is the months of July and August. The low season starts around the end of October and lasts until April.

Useful Tip – The high season in Indonesia is the months of April to October, with July and August being the peak months. The low season runs from November to March.

High season (April to October)

These months are the best time to visit Indonesia. Papua has the least rainfall, and the temperatures are good. Keep in mind that it will considerably busier and the prices will be higher in the peak season.

Shoulder Season (March and September)

There is not really an off-peak season in Indonesia. The months of March and September are just after and before the high season so you often have good weather and low prices. However, this is not the case everywhere in the country.

Low Season (November to March)

In the months of November to March, more rain falls throughout Indonesia. This is the best time to visit Papua because there is less rain. Traveling is cheaper and easier. There is one advantage of the rainy season: nature is beautifully green!

Indonesia Weather by Month

The weather in Indonesia can never be predicted accurately, especially considering the changes in climate in recent years. It can be dry in the rainy season and it can rain during the dry season. It can vary per month. To give you a better idea of the best time to visit Indonesia, we have listed the average weather for each month.

Indonesia Weather in January

Unlike many other countries in Asia, January is not a very favorable month to travel here. Not surprising since November to April is the rainy season. In January you have rain all over Indonesia. That does not mean that the sun is always hidden away. There is still a decent amount of sunshine, but you will have more rain showers. In January you have the best chance of seeing the sun in the north of the country.

Indonesia Weather in February

Although the rainy season runs until April, the sun is starting to return to the north of Sumatra, where rainfall is lowest in this month. However, the rest of Indonesia continues to suffer from rain. As you go to the end of the month the rain takes over. The temperatures are still around 30°C (86°F).

Indonesia Weather in March

March is a great month for traveling to Indonesia. You are heading towards the dry season, so with a bit of luck, you will have many dry days. March is still part of the “official” rainy season so you can still expect a lot of rain. The advantage is that airline tickets and prices for tours and accommodations are much cheaper.

Indonesia Weather in April

The last month of the rainy season, although you can never be quite sure, especially in such a large country like Indonesia. In April the sun returns to most of Indonesia, while Sumatra has more rain again. Keep in mind that the “tourist season” is ramping up again from April meaning prices and the number of crowded places are going up.

Indonesia Weather in May

May is the start of the best time to visit Indonesia. We were in Indonesia in May and have had a single day of rain. In addition, it is not that busy because you will be arriving before the bulk of the international vacations start. For islands such as Bali and Lombok, this is the best month of the year, certainly for beachgoers. The islands remain warm and dry everywhere, although some areas will occasionally experience some rain. This is a great time to spot orangutans.

Indonesia Weather in June

The beginning of June is perhaps the second-best time to visit Indonesia, after the month of May. You will be there just before all the international school holidays start and you are almost always assured of good weather. The landscape is at its best, just after the rainy season (as well as in May). In addition, you often have blue skies and tropical temperatures above 30°C (86°F).

Indonesia Weather in July

July is part of the peak season and throughout Indonesia, it is hot and dry. Due to the international school holidays, it is also the busiest month of the year where accommodations are often fully booked well in advance and the popular beaches are full of travelers. In terms of weather, it is the best month of the year.

Indonesia Weather in August

August is quite similar to July, both in terms of great weather and in terms of crowds and high prices. It is still peak season and more visitors come in August than in July.

Indonesia Weather in September

September, along with April and May, is a very good month for traveling in Indonesia. You have almost the same weather as in August (and that’s good!) but without the crowds and high prices. The school holidays are over so it is a lot less busy.

Indonesia Weather in October

October is actually the last month of the year to enjoy the nice weather. This month is the “end” of the best time to visit Indonesia, although it is difficult to predict. The rainy season starts at the end of the month. It is still warm and sunny, but in some areas, it can rain more often. For Sumatra, it is one of the wettest months.

Indonesia Weather in November

The rainy season is in full swing again and you have a high chance of rain throughout Indonesia. Strangely enough, you can still experience quite a bit of sun in Bali and the north of Sulawesi. Temperatures are still around 30°C (86°F) in most areas, so it’s definitely not cold. The rain makes it just a little less pleasant.

Indonesia Weather in December

In December the chance of rain is high throughout Indonesia. In addition, it is quite pricey because Christmas and New Year’s Eve fall in this month. Our advice is, therefore, to book in advance.

Best Time to Visit Bali (+ Gili’s)

Bali and the Gili Islands are a great holiday destination all year round. However, the best time to visit Bali is from April to September. During these months the least rain, in terms of both time and quantity, will fall. It also feels less stuffy, making the heat more bearable.

Keep the high and low season in mind as well. The seasons have a direct influence on the price of accommodation, tours, and transport. The high season is during the months of July and August, during Easter holidays, Christmas, and New Year’s, roughly the months of December and January.

It is then the busiest in Bali and the prices are the highest. However, for many reasons, it is better to come to Bali in April, May, June, September, and October. That is just before and just after the high season.

It is still the dry season, it is slightly less humid, and prices for accommodation, tours, and transport can be 30-50% cheaper than during the high season.

Rainy Season in Indonesia

As stated above, most rain falls between November and March/April. Depending on the monsoon, most parts of the country have a rainy season and a dry period.

Only on Sumatra and Kalimantan is the rainfall distributed fairly evenly throughout the year. If you do not like rain and you do not intend to wear a poncho, it is best to come to Indonesia between May and September.

The rainy season runs from November to April. The number of days with rain increases and the intensity of the rain showers increases. Because of this, there is high humidity at the end of a monsoon period, which means it can feel a little clammy and stuffy.

Although it is almost everywhere around 30°C (86°F), there are some differences per region in terms of months in which it rains.

Keep in mind that some islands are less accessible during the rainy season. If it rains a lot, the sea is a bit wilder so some boats don’t sail.

Best Time to Visit Indonesia For Geen Rice Terraces
The Low (Rainy) Season will make the rice fields, like these on Bali, look very green and beautiful!

Dry Season in Indonesia

Due to the tropical climate in Indonesia, it is around 30°C (86°F) all year round. In the summer or the dry season, these temperatures can rise slightly. For many, the dry season sounds like the best time visit to Indonesia; the biggest disadvantage, however, is that a large part of the landscape is dry and bare during the dry season.

The dry season runs roughly from May to September/October. This is also the best time to visit Indonesia.

Don’t expect to find green, lush rice fields or large waterfalls in the dry season. However, for those who want to laze by the beach and not want to go into the jungle or visit rice fields, the dry season is perfect.

Are you going to be in Indonesia during the dry season and are you looking for some refreshments? Then head towards the higher-located areas in Indonesia. There is even eternal snow on the highest peaks of Papua.
